    Author: Pollock Robert E. :: 1963 vol 31 Dec Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 901 - 904
    Comments and/or Abstract > "A mirror suspended by a torsion fiber in air may be driven at resonance by the force from an interrupted light beam to reach a detectable oscillation amplitude. The radiometer forces which compete with the true light force may be separated experimentally. The method was tested as a laboratory experiment by a small freshman class and proved to be workable and interesting to the students. The concrete experience with damped simple-harmonic motion and with small-signal detection techniques as well as the simplicity of the apparatus enhance the interest of this project as a teaching experiment. Author: Schot Steven H. :: 1978 vol 46 no 11 Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 1090-1094
    Comments and/or Abstract > The time rate of change of acceleration has been called the jerk and is important in certain applications of mechanics and acoustics. For planar motion, the jerk vector is resolved here into tangential-normal and radial-transverse components, and the normal component is expressed in terms of an affine differential invariant known as the aberrancy. Using known aberrancy properties of curves, several geometrical properties of the jerk vector are established for plane motion.

    Author: Carl Helrich :: 1979 vol 47 no 4 Apr Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 367 - 368
    Comments and/or Abstract > "A novel pendulum is described and analyzed; its spherical bob can roll on a track of the same arc as its swing when suspended by a cord. Comparison of the motion in the two cases shows the effect of the rotational motion in rolling. The motion is analyzed with and without the Lagrangian, and is thus appropriate to analytical mechanics or general physics courses. "

(14239) A new model of the Foucault pendulum
    Author: Weltner Klaus :: 1979 vol 47 no 4 Apr Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 365 - 366
    Comments and/or Abstract > "Foucault showed the rotation of the earth by his fundamental pendulum experiment. In the classroom the experiment is usually simulated by a gravitational pendulum on a rotating turntable. By this the situation on the poles of the earth may be simulated, but it is impossible to investigate the dependency on geographical latitude. If we simulate the Foucault pendulum by an elastic steel wire pendulum we get the opportunity to show the entire effect, inclusive of the dependency on geographical latitude. "

    Author: Zilio, S.C. :: 1982 50 jan Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 450 - 452
    Comments and/or Abstract > A pedagogical experiment to study the frequency spectral composition of the pendulum motion as a function of its amplitude is described. The angle is measured with a very simple apparatus, whose major components are an x-y recorder and a one-turn helipot. In order to obtain the frequency spectrum, a pocket calculator is used to Fourier transform the data by means of the discrete Simpson's appproximation. The period is determined directly from the angle versus time plot with an accuracy of a few parts in 10^3.

    Comments and/or Abstract > "Synchronization is a common phenomenon in physical and biological systems. We examine the synchronization of two (and more) metronomes placed on a freely moving base. The small motion of the base couples the pendulums causing synchronization. The synchronization is generally in-phase, with antiphase synchronization occurring only under special conditions. The metronome system provides a mechanical realization of the popular Kuramoto model for synchronization of biological oscillators, and is excellent for classroom demonstrations and an undergraduate physics lab. ?2002 American Association of Physics Teachers."

    Author: Kostov Yavor :: 2008 vol 76 no 10 oct Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 956 - 962
    Comments and/or Abstract > "We analyze a simple pendulum by measuring the period and the maximum speed of the bob. Both quantities are measured to high precision using a laser diode and an infrared photodetector located at the bottom of the pendulum. Expressing the period in terms of the maximum speed enables students to examine the large angle dependence of the period, and provides a method to calibrate the speed and do a detailed analysis of the effect of air friction on a sphere. We find that the force due to air friction is well described by a linear and quadratic term in the speed. We investigate the dependence of each term on the sphere's diameter for Reynolds numbers from 250 to 10^4. "

    Author: Gil, Salvador :: 2008 vol 76 no 9 sep Year Vol (No) Month (or Chapter/Auction item): :: Pages: 843 - 847
    Comments and/or Abstract > We investigate the anharmonicity of a large amplitude pendulum and develop a novel technique to detect the high Fourier components as a function of the amplitude for large amplitudes close to 180?. The technique involves doing a Fourier analysis on each half-cycle of the amplitude versus time. The presence of the third and fifth harmonics is detected and the variations of the corresponding Fourier coefficients with amplitude are studied. The experimental setup is inexpensive and simple to implement.
