SubTitle: [William Manley?s useful instructions on Pocket Watches. For all those who have Pocket Watches, in an excellent translation from English to German... - Author: William Manley, T.B.D.M{Translator]
- Publisher:
Keywords: clock watch
Language: GER
Notes: Author: Wilhelm Manley (stated author of a supposed original English language edition). But neither a copy of the English original, nor any record of a potential author named Manley (or any other potential author) has ever been identified, nor has anybody todate succeeded in identifying the supposed translator identified in all editions only by the initials T.B.D.M. Furthermore there is no known British clockmaker or author of that era known under the name of William Manley. This catalogers current best guess is that this is NOT really a translation from the English, but the work of some anonymous writer in Germany, who chose to write anonymously, and who used the ruse of an invented ?English? author for marketing purposes. Lobern, 66 [2] p. Despite its virtually identical title, and the fact that Baillie lists 1715 as the first edition this is a completely different book than the book covered in this note. As Graf points out the 1715 book is the first German translation of Henry Sully: Abr?g? De quelques R?gles pour fair un bon usage des Montres (1711)? Second edition Guilielmi Manleys Neu-vermehrter Unterricht von Sack-Uhren : Allen denen /, Welche Sack-Uhren haben, zum besten / aus dem Englischen ins Teutsche ?bersetzet von T. B. D. M. Worldcat records one copy that could be this edition, dating it ?around 1730?, under the title ?Wilhelm Manleys vollkommner Unterricht von Sack- und Schlag-Uhren. ( OBDC # 46290768, sole copy as per Worldcat in Nieders?chsische Staats- und Universit?tsbibliothek G?ttingen. ? The third edition, not recorded by Baillie, is the one under OBDC No. 314614713, published in 1750. The forth edition (what Baillie describes as the third edition) is the one here cataloged, and appears to be the most common one, published ?Wienn ?i.e Vienna (Austria), 1751, Conrad Monath. As mentioned above Worldcat records three copies.? The last (fifth) known edition is 1761 in Nuernberg, Wilhelm Manleys n?tzlicher Unterricht von Sackuhren : allen denen, welche Sackuhren haben, zum besten; aus dem Engl. ins Teutsche ?bers. und mit 1 Kupfertabelle vers. / William Manley, Published: ?N?rnberg : Monath, 1761?Binding: 140mm x 85 mm, duodecimo format. Old plain binding, possibly contemporary. Now in plain, protective brown clamshell (late 20th century).Provenance: Bookplate of Joseph Sternfeld on the inside front cover (Sternfeld was a well known horological book collector in the USA in the 1960s to 1980s). The book was Lot #20 in the 22 February 2012 auction by Brookfield at Donnington Priory, where the personal horological library of Charles Allix, a well known British horological scholar, author and part time horological book dealer (successor to Malcolm Gardner) was auctioned of, where it was acquired by Fortunat Mueller-Maerki, horological bibliographer, in Sussex NJ, USA. Rarity: This is one of the currently quite rare horological books. Worldcat lists only four known copies (details see below). Of the major public specialized 8 horological librairies (NAWCC, AWCM, AWI, DUM, DGC, WCC, BHI, MIH) only two (BHI and DUM) seem to have a copies ( BHI has the 1751 edition, and DUM has a complete set of all five currently known editions [with the 1715, 1728, 1750, 1751, and 1761 editions]). Baillie seemed to have owned a copy of the same edition as the current volume at the time he wrote his bibliography, i.e. ca. 1940s, but he was aware of only four editions (he missed 1750).
