Notes: This is a high resolution, color facsimile edition of the ca. 1364 illustrated latin manuscript in the Padua Library of 66 leaves called "Tractatus Astrarium" by the Padua physician Giovanni de Dondi dall'orologgio . (Original is BHM 7014) There are two slightly different original contrmporary texts by de Dondi describing the same artifact. [The other one -original in Venice- was transcribed into English by Baillie, Lloyd and Ward and published by AHS as BHM 2897] The one reproduced here is at the Biblioteca Capitolar in Padua (Italy) under Catalog Number "ms D 39". [15th or 16th century copies of the Padua manuscript exist in the Ambrosiana 9C.139), and the Museo Civico of Padua (CM 631): This facsimile edition was produced to honor the election of emmanuel Poule (scholar of medival scientific instruments) to the l'academie des inscriptions et belles lettres by his friends.

The manuscripts is presumed to be the original [untill 1844 at Dondi family] is in the Marciana Library in Venice [Cat. a.440,, I.278 (L.VIII-XVII); four 15th and 16th century copies exist one is in Ambrosiana , one at the Torinoi library, one at the Bodleian and one at Eaton, some sources date original to 1397, the clock was made 1348 to 1364. Essentially the same content as in Dondi's Tractatus Astrarium (BHM No. 7014). An english translation of the text was published 1974 by Baillie, Lloyd and Ward.
