Notes: Rivista della Societ? Filologica Friulana", XCIII (2017), n. 1-2, pp. 49-74, Abstract In the XIV century the municipality of Udine had such an incredible demographic growth that it becamean important city and started contending Cividale?s hegemonic role over the lands under the Patriarchateof Aquileia. It still lacked, however, a place that could emblematically represent this civic power and showthe city?s newly emerging identity to the inhabitants. Since the city could not give itself a palace (a buildingreserved to the Patriarch), Udine thus decided to build a civic tower in 1370. e expenses that the cityendured for the construction and maintenance of the tower are a good indicator of how stubbornly attached ey, in fact, reached the point of stating that ?our city is not well without the clock-tower?.
